Canonical Churches
Throughout the world, there are 15 autocephalous Churches (fully self-governing) and 4 Autonomous Churches (self-ruling, but dependencies of an autocephalous "mother Church").
Certain Autocephalous Churches -- while not recognizing the autocephalous status of the Orthodox Church in America -- do affirm its canonical standing within the Orthodox communion. As a result of this official non-recognition, several other autocephalous Churches also have Diocesan structures in North America. These jurisdictions cooperate as members of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA). SCOBA membership is indicated by an * below.
One should understand that the Orthodox Church has no copyright on the terms "Orthodox" or "canonical." As a result, many other groups which we do not recognize and which have no historical standing within the Orthodox Church as described and listed on this site, use such terms for themselves.
